April 23, 1877 – April 22, 1941
Jetson is the third son and fourth child, born to Dumas and Emeline Strickland Maness born April 23, 1877. He was born and raised in Sheffield Township, Robbins, NC. Jetson attended St. Phillips Episcopal Church School and also attended New Zion Church with his family. Jetson helped his father on the farm while growing up. He left North Carolina in the late 1890’s or early 1900 settling in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Jetson was not found in the 1900 census reports but he was living in Cincinnati, Ohio in Hamilton County in 1910. Jetson’s wife was named Katie and they had been married for one year. The 1910 census shows that Jetson was 33 years old and Katie was 19 years old. Jetson’s last name was spelled “Mayness” and his occupation is listed as a “Teamster” driving wagons. Katie’s parents had moved to and also lived in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1910. It is believed this is where Jetson met and married his wife, Katie. Their children were born in Ohio, therefore Jetson and Katie lived there through 1914.
In 1920, Jetson and his two children, Jetson Jr. (pictured left with his father and his wife Dorothy) and Evelyn Maness (pictured right) are living in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in Allegheny County. He is listed as a son-in-law and living with John and Elizabeth Miller. This census shows that Jetson is a widower at the age of 39, and from this, it verifies Katie had died between the birth of their son in 1914 and the recording of the 1920 census. It has not been verified if she died in Ohio or Pennsylvania. Jetson’s occupation in the census is listed as a fireman for Carnegie Steel. Jetson died April 22, 1941, and is buried in Monongahela Cemetery, Braddock Hills, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.
